What is Skat?

Skat is a three-player card game that was invented in the early 19th century in Thuringia, Germany. It is based on the older games of Tarock and Schafkopf, but with a unique bidding process that adds an extra layer of strategy and excitement. Skat is widely played in Germany and other parts of Europe, as well as in some parts of North America. It is considered one of the best and most complex card games for three players.

How to Play Skat

Skat is played with a 32-card deck, either with German or French suits. The cards are ranked from high to low as follows: Jacks, Aces, 10s, Kings, Queens, 9s, 8s, 7s. The dealer shuffles and deals 10 cards to each player, and puts the remaining two cards face down in the middle as the Skat. The player to the left of the dealer is the forehand, the next player is the middlehand, and the dealer is the rearhand.

The bidding starts between the forehand and the middlehand. The middlehand either passes or bids a number that represents the minimum value of points he or she expects to win in the game. The forehand either passes or says yes to match the bid. The bidding continues until one player passes. Then, the winner of the first bidding competes with the rearhand in the same way. The final winner of the bidding becomes the declarer and picks up the Skat cards. He or she can exchange two cards from his or her hand with the Skat cards and then announce a contract.

The contract determines which suit is trump (if any), how many points are needed to win, and how much the game is worth. There are three main types of contracts: suit games, grand games, and null games. In suit games, one of the four suits is chosen as trump, and all four Jacks are also trumps ranking above the trump suit. The declarer needs at least 61 points out of 120 to win. In grand games, only the four Jacks are trumps, ranking from clubs to diamonds. The declarer needs at least 61 points to win. In null games, there are no trumps and no points. The declarer wins by losing every trick.

The game value is calculated by multiplying the base value of the contract by various factors that depend on the bidding result, the cards in hand, and the outcome of the game. For example, if the declarer wins a suit game with hearts as trump without using the Skat cards (a hand game), with one matador (a sequence of trumps from Jack of clubs), with Schneider (90 or more points), he or she scores 18 (base value) x 2 (hand) x 2 (matador) x 3 (Schneider) = 216 points.
